Tiruchirapalli, fondly known by its colonial-era name, Trichy, was ruled by various South Indian dynasties over centuries who bestowed the city with their legacies. Trichy, however, rose to fame during the Nayak rule and emerged as a major trading hub. Then came the Carnatic Wars and the power struggle between the French & the British, where Trichy fell into the British lap. Join us as we explore Trichy with local storytellers who peel its ancient layers to reveal its many legends & secrets.
Sprawled on an island between the two arms of River Cauvery, Ranganathaswamy Temple is one of the largest temple complexes in India. Seven concrete enclosures with massive gateways take you to the sanctum sanctorum that enshrines Lord Ranganath, a form of Lord Vishnu. Its main entrance, a 13 tiered tower, is one of the largest temple towers in the world. Home to numerous shrines, water tanks, and inscriptions on its walls, Sri Ranganathaswamy Temple is a marvel of Dravidian temple architecture.
Built on a 273 ft high rock, believed to be one of the oldest rock formations on the planet, Rockfort once played an important part in the Carnatic Wars fought between the British and the French in India. This Nayak era fort is now lost to the ravages of time & wars, but its Ganesha temple, located on a rocky outcrop at the top, and accessible by around 400 rock-hewn steps, is much visited by both pilgrims and curious travelers.
Located in the heart of Trichy, Our Lady of Lourdes Church is a replica of its namesake in France. This hallowed structure is marked for its delicate stain glass windows depicting Bible stories, tall gothic towers with artistic engravings, and its 90 ft high bell tower.

Trichy’s lively markets are a shopper’s delight. Silk saris, traditional jewelry, wood & stone-carved artifacts, and Winston Churchill’s favorite Cheroot cigars are some of the collectibles of Trichy.
The best time to visit Trichy would be in winter from October to March when the temperatures dip, and it is much pleasant to explore the city.
By Air - Tiruchirappalli International Airport connects Trichy to major Indian cities and some select destinations in Asia.
