Hailed as one of the Sapta Puris, or the seven most sacred cities in India, Kanchipuram is often called the city of a thousand temples. Its ancient roots trace back to the Chola kings in the 2nd century BC, followed by the Pallavas when it was visited by the Chinese traveler Hiuen Tsang. However, it is believed that Kanchipuram flourished under the patronage of the Pallava rulers, much famed for their artistic legacy of Mahabalipuram temples & sculptures. A city next only to Varanasi in holy stature, Kanchipuram has forever been a major center for learning and a pilgrimage for Hindus, Buddhists, and Jains.
Believed to be built at the beginning of 8th century AD, this Shiva temple, the oldest in Kanchipuram, is a marvel of intricate carvings and exquisite detailing. Its elaborately carved lion towers, holding 58 small shrines dedicated to various forms of Shiva, is simply breathtaking. A spectacular pillared hall, gorgeous frescos, and tall Vimanas and Gopurams indicate its classic Dravidian architectural roots.
The largest temple of Kanchipuram, spread over an area of 10 hectares, was built by the Pallavas with major additions during the rule of Krishna Deva Raya of Vijayanagar Kingdom. Its lofty gopuram (gateway), one of the tallest in south India, a thousand pillared hall housing 1008 Shiva Lingams, and its intricate carvings are sure to captivate your heart. An ancient mango tree in the complex, believed to be over 3500 years old, is known to bear four different varieties of mangoes.
Spread over an area of 5km, this beautiful temple complex is dedicated to Goddess Kamakshi, a manifestation of Parvati. Its tall golden spire, four spectacular Gopurams, numerous pillared halls, and a beautiful temple tank create a spiritual aura. Shrouded in myths & legends, connected to the holy Adi Shankaracharya, and home to spectacular temple processions, this temple draws both believers and curious travelers for a spiritual experience.
