Named after the Mughal Emperor Aurangzeb and once his capital in the Deccan, Aurangabad is now the much-acclaimed gateway to the artistic heritage of Ajanta-Ellora caves. This historical city, once surrounded by 52 gates out of which only 13 have survived the ravages of time & invasions, is a goldmine of history & heritage. Let’s take a quick trip through this bustling tourism capital of Maharashtra, where ancient caves, magnificent forts, and solemn mausoleum depict the enduring legacy of its rich past.
Named after a nearby village and carved somewhere during 200 BC to 500 AD, these spectacular caves are an artistic wonder. Built as monasteries & retreats for Buddhist monks, this set of 30 caves, is a delightful jumble of sculptures and some of the finest cave paintings across the world. These sculptures & paintings, based on the themes of Bodhisattva & Jataka tales, have survived for centuries and are now preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
This cave complex was developed much after Ajanta Caves, around 600 AD to 1000 AD, and is renowned for its fine sculptures. Though there are around 100 caves in the complex, only 30 of them have been opened for public viewing. These include 7 Hindu, 12 Buddhist, and 5 Jain caves carved over a period of five centuries. An entrancing mishmash of temples, monasteries, & spectacular monoliths, these UNESCO-preserved caves are the epitome of ancient cave art & architecture in India.
This magnificent 12th-century hilltop fortress is one of the few invincible forts of medieval Maharashtra. Built by Yadavs of Deogiri as Devgiri Fort, it was later seized & fortified by Mohammad-bin- Tughlaq, who renamed it as Daulatabad Fort. Take a hike up to the fort to witness its magnificent architecture and brilliant engineering.
This spectacular sandstone replica of the Taj Mahal was built by Prince Azam as a memorial to his mother & Aurangzeb’s wife Begum Rabia. Although often called the Taj of the Deccan and a poor man’s Taj, this structure is a fine specimen of brilliant craftsmanship and detailing.
This set of 12 rock-cut Hindu & Buddhist caves, nestled in the Sinyachal ranges of the Western Ghats, is believed to be 2000 years old. A little overshadowed by the glory of Ajanta-Ellora, these caves with their ornate pillars, detailed carvings & compelling sculpture, are a masterpiece of rock-cut architecture in India.
