Bodh Gaya is a Buddhist melting pot where people of various nationalities come together to celebrate the essence of Buddhism and to pay homage to Gautam Buddha at his place of enlightenment. A prince-turned-ascetic, Siddhartha, meditated here under a tree, attained divine knowledge, and became Buddha- the enlightened one who showed a new way of life to the people of the subcontinent. Lost in ravages of time & history, this holy place was rediscovered in the early 19th century and is one of the most sacred Buddhist pilgrimages in India.
Originally built by Emperor Ashoka in 260 BC, this spectacular complex is one of the most sacred pilgrimages of Buddhism. A sprawling complex, with numerous ancient stupas & votives pertinent to Siddhartha’s enlightenment and the seven weeks thereafter, Mahabodhi temple is now a UNESCO-listed World Heritage Site. The Bodhi Tree growing in the temple is the direct descendant of the tree under which Siddhartha gained enlightenment and is a perfect place to meditate and contemplate the teachings of Buddhism.
Often referred to as the Giant Buddha, this massive seated Buddha statue, is one of the largest in the country. Commissioned by a Japanese community and consecrated by the 14th Dalai Lama, this 82 ft high statue is an architectural marvel.
This elegant temple, built by the Thai monarch back in 1956, is a symbol of beauty, prosperity, and the Thai way of Buddhism.
Built-in typical Bhutanese architectural style in red-white-gold hues, this beautiful temple & monastery hosts a gorgeous 7-feet-high image of Gautam Buddha.
This Japanese temple & monastery, also called Indosan Nipponji Temple, is built in the Japanese style of minimalism. The façade is simple & elegant, while the inner walls & ceilings are covered in colorful paintings depicting tales from Buddha’s life. A beautiful Peace Bell completes the picture.
Vishnupad Temple, translating into Lord Vishnu’s feet, is home to Dharamsila, a basalt slab marked by the footprints of Lord Vishnu. Thousands of Hindus visit here to perform rituals & make offerings to their ancestors to free them from the constant cycle of life & birth.
