Kolkata, formerly called Calcutta, is the capital city and most preferred touristic city of West Bengal. Be its lively culture, delectable food or wondrous buildings, it has something for every traveler that seek new and exhilarating experiences.
Monuments like Howrah Bridge and Victoria Memorial have become the symbols of this charming city. The unmissable experience is Durga Pooja festival; the complete city is decked to nine with flowers and lights. It is these small and beautiful things that make Kolkata India’s ‘City of Joy’.
Howrah Bridge is the most prominent attraction and the symbol of Kolkata. It is a cantilever road bridge that spans the Hooghly River. Measuring 705 m in length, it is one of the longest cantilever road bridges in the world. In 1965, it was renamed to Rabindra Setu but it continues to be recognized by its former name. It is best to visit the historic bridge during sunset to catch its illuminated view.
When in Kolkata, you can’t afford to miss this colonial gem that presents a brilliant fusion of multiple architectures. The white beauty located in the middle of a 64-acre garden seemingly looks like a dazzling pearl in stark contrast. It was constructed in the memory of Queen Victoria. The building consists of 25 exhibition galleries and a museum. You will find a collection of rare antiquarian books, portraits of Victoria and Prince Albert and more.
India is known for its fascinating history, and this captivating museum offers its informative summary with a rich collection of artifacts. It is the largest and oldest museum in India built in 1814 C.E. The exhibitions are divided into 6 sections comprising of 35 galleries. You will get a chance to see antiques like the Buddhist stupa from Bharhut, the Buddha's ashes and the Ashoka pillar.
The beauteous fort is reminiscent of the bygone British era. See the splendid structure of the fort that is built in the shape of a star with six colossal gates. It covers an area of 70.9 hectares that also features a 9-hole golf course. A unique feature that will intrigue you is the dry moat rimming the fort; it was used for enfilade fire against the attackers.
The repository of imperial architectural buildings is highlighted by this glorious cathedral of Anglican background. It is noted for its classic Gothic architecture that speaks volume of the British-Raj. Built between 1839 and 1847, it has a capacity to accommodate 800 to 1,000 people.
