West Bengal

West Bengal

Experience the Bongs!

Rising from the mighty Bay of Bengal, traversing through emerald rice paddies & tea estates, and reaching up to the Himalayan realm, West Bengal is a treasure-trove of natural and cultural wealth. Its remarkable ensemble of Raj-era monuments, colorful culture, choicest Assam tea, chugging heritage toy train, mangrove swamps, and fearsome royal Bengal tigers makes it a fascinating destination in the east.

Check out the magnificent museums in Kolkata, take to the streets during Durga Pooja festivities, eat a juicy roshogulla, and go for a tiger safari in the mangroves of Sundarbans for a complete Bengal experience.

West Bengal Special

Heritage

West Bengal is certainly a historian’s delight! The glorious ruins of Bishnupur, the erstwhile princely state of Cooch Behar, the legacy of Rabindranath Tagore in Shantiniketan, and the colonial-era monuments & museums in Kolkata depict the rich heritage of West Bengal.

Culture

West Bengal is a cultural goldmine with lots of elements like literature, theater art, dance & music, and festivals contributing to its rich culture. Asia’s first Nobel laureate, Rabindranath Tagore, first Oscar winner Satyajit Ray, and the great thinker & philosopher Swami Vivekanand belonged to Bengal. Bengal’s traditional folk drama known as Jatra, its terracotta art and Kalighat paintings, its traditional masked dance called Chau and its lavish Durga Puja tableaus form the colorful fabric of this splendid state.

Hill Stations

The tea-draped Himalayan foothills of West Bengal are home to quaint, colonial-era hill stations like the vivacious Darjeeling and the unhurried Kalimpong. Dense forests, rushing rivers and a sprinkling of Buddhist monasteries welcome you to these charming hill stations. Both idyllic havens and adventure hotspots, the hills of West Bengal are a delightful experience.

Wildlife

Take a boat safari to the mangrove swamps of Sunderbans National Park and spot the royal Bengal tiger, wild alligators, and beautiful Ganges dolphins. Wildlife buffs may also check out Padmaja Naidu Himalayan Zoological Park that hosts breeding centers for red pandas, snow leopards, and Tibetan wolves.

Alluring Destinations of West Bengal

Kolkata

Aptly dubbed as the City of Joy, Kolkata aka Calcutta is a heartening vision during Durga Puja festivities. The erstwhile capital of India during colonial times and the current capital of West Bengal, Kolkata is an epitome of elegance and grace. Its age-revered Kali temple, iconic Howrah Bridge, magnificent Victoria memorial, exotic China town, and dazzling jazz bars bolster its old-world charm. A trip to nearby Shantiniketan adds to the cultural experience.

Darjeeling

Located in the foothills of Bengal, the rolling hills of Darjeeling are a sight for the sore eyes. Ride the smoke-billowing toy train chugging through tunnels & bridges, walk the forest trails, visit the charming monasteries, and breathe in the tranquility of the hills. Hike along the Singalila Ridge, watch the sunrise over the majestic Kanchenjunga peak and taste some steaming momos for a memorable Darjeeling experience. Take a trip to nearby Kalimpong for some added natural beauty and thrill.

Kalimpong

Kalimpong is a surreal hill-station in West Bengal settled on the Himalayas. It is located on a ridge between the two hills: Deolo Hill and Duroin Hill. The scenery is enriched by River Teesta which beautifully separates it from Sikkim. Its lofty height of 1,250 m will offer you a breathtaking view of the world's third highest peak, Kangchenjunga.

Bishnupur

This tiny town, once ruled by the Malla rulers, is home to beautiful terracotta temples and ruins. Built-in an intriguing blend of Bengali and Islamic architecture, these temples exemplify the cultures prevailing in the region.

Sunderban National Park

The mangrove-lined waterways of the Sundarbans lure you for an intriguing experience in the dark mangrove forests that are home to the royal Bengal tiger. Take a boat safari to the wilderness of Sunderban National Park and spot the elusive tiger lurking in the shadows of mangroves. The park is also known for the rare crocodiles and Ganges Dolphins that inhabit its murky waters.

West Bengal is a beautiful saga of colonial past blended with Bengali culture. You may add a quick trip to Sikkim to your West Bengal tour for an enhanced holiday experience. Do reach us for personalized tour packages to help us create best-possible itineraries to match your travel needs.

Caper Travel designed a three week tour to Rajasthan and Goa for four of us in a private car during March. The driver, guides and everyone associated with the organisation were professional, reliable and punctual! We had an amazing time, made even better because of the good accomodation choices and extra additions, such as elephant and camel ride.
Thank you so much Caper for giving us a truly memorable experience of your beautiful country!
