Rishikesh

Rishikesh

Uttarakhand is also called 'Devbhoomi' which means the land of Gods. It is no surprise that it is home to several religiously significant places that are mentioned in the Hindu epics Ramayana and Mahabharata. One of them is Rishikesh, a peaceful city lying at the Himalayan foothills on the bank of sacred Ganga River. It is said that sages and saints used to visit this pilgrimage town for meditation.

Those spots are today sanctified with ancient temples and ashrams that are thronged by devout. The scenic attributes of Rishikesh are a magnet for adventure, Ayurveda and Yoga enthusiasts. What started as an Indian traditional healing practice ‘Yoga’ in Rishikesh is today a highly followed healing science in the world. For adventure seekers, river-rafting, bungee jumping makes for a thrilling sojourn.

Alluring Destinations of Rishikesh

Triveni Ghat

Ghats have been an integral part of the sacred rivers in India for religious purposes. Likewise, the most famous in Rishikesh is Triveni Ghat. The name is derived from the spot being the confluence of three rivers – Ganga, Yamuna and Saraswati. Pilgrims come here to take a holy dip and attend the famous Ganga Aarti in the evening. Some sights like the drifting leaf carrying flowers and Diya, mesmerizing sunset and the soul-stirring environment of Ganga aarti are highly satisfying.

Lakshman Jhula

It is a suspension bridge that serves as the prominent attraction of the city. It hangs above the sacred Ganga River, connecting the two bisected parts of the city. In accordance to Hindu mythology, Lakshmana crossed the river on jute ropes at the same place as the bridge. Unfortunately, it got washed away by inundation. Later in 1939, it was restored by the Britishers. The banks are dotted with numerous ashrams and temples that are great to have a peaceful time by the river.

Neelkantha Mahadev Temple

Located in the outskirts of the city, do visit this ancient temple dedicated to Lord Shiva. Its history states that Lord Shiva ingested poison here which was formed after Devas and Asuras churned the ocean, the process called Samudramanthan, to obtain Amrita. After consuming, his throat became blue, due to which he is also called Neelkantha meaning the one with 'Blue throat'. You can relate to the sculptures of Devas and Asuras illustrating Samudramanthan. The main deity is Shivlinga, which is cleaned with the natural water spring present in the temple complex.

Shiva Puri

Shivpuri is a paradise for adventure fanatics and lies nearly 18 km from the city. It is entrenched on a picturesque location on the bank of Ganga River with a Himalayan backdrop. It tempts tourists with an array of adventure activities like white-river rafting, rappelling, bungee jumping, rock climbing and more. All these activities are conducted by trained professional instructors with the best safety measures.

Swargashram

Swargashram is a group of ashrams and temples that offer stay at low prices and classes on Yoga by experts. You will love the location on the edge of Ganga River near Ram Jhula with lots of other temples encompassing it. The past few years have seen a rise in the inflow of tourists making it a preferred place for a spiritual retreat. The complex is embellished with sculptures of Hindu Gods and Goddesses. An add-on is numerous eateries that offer fresh and authentic Ayurvedic food.

We had an amazing time, made even better because of the good accomodation choices and extra additions, such as elephant and camel ride.
