Myths, mystique, and magical panorama come together to form this beautiful little village on the Pamban Island, in the Ramanathaswamy district of Tamil Nadu. One of the Char Dhams- the most sacred Hindu pilgrimages, a scenic retreat, and the mystical land from the Hindu epic Ramayana, Rameswaram is not only a believer’s place of worship but also a soul seekers haven. Join us on this spiritual journey, as we retrace the steps of Lord Rama who prayed on this island and blessed it with his presence.
A prayer of penance & thanksgiving by one God to another formed the foundation of this magnificent temple. It was here that Lord Rama prayed to Lord Shiva seeking penance & blessings after the battle with demon Ravana. It is believed that one of the Shiva Lingams here was built by Goddess Sita out of the sand and installed by Lord Rama. The present structure dates back to the 12th century with regular renovations and additions by the rulers in the region.
A piece of mythology comes alive in Rameswaram as we witness Ram Setu- a kind of bridge or causeway of limestone shoals & fragments of sandbanks that joins Rameswaram with the island of Mannar in Sri Lanka. Leaping out of the pages of Ramayana where Lord Rama’s monkey army built a bridge between India & Sri Lanka to rescue the kidnapped goddess, Sita, this structure now confirmed by satellite imagery certainly brings alive the legends of Rameswaram.
The sacred waters of Agniteertham, where Lord Rama had bathed after killing the demon, Ravana, are believed to be sacred and to absolve you from your sins. All believers take a dip in these waters to wash away their mortal sins.
Another fragment from the epic Ramayana reveals that during the battle, Lord Lakshmana was injured, and was saved by the healing herb from the Gandhamadhan Paravatham brought down by the monkey God Hanumana. The parvatham or the mountain thus remained at Rameshwaram and is now the highest point on this island where the imprints of Lord Rama’s feet are housed in a temple.
Located on the eastern tip of Rameswaram, Dhanushkodi is known for its gorgeous beach and a small temple. Its panoramic landscape and pristine waters make it a perfect place to indulge in photography & surfing.
A delightful cacophony greets you here as hundreds of birds, both resident & migrant, flock the shallow waters of the sanctuary. A birder's paradise and a photographer's dream, this beautiful bird sanctuary is a must-visit for travelers to Rameswaram.
