There is something hypnotizing about the scenery of Kodaikanal that is evocative of jade greenery, sparkling lakes and thunderous waterfalls. The name of the hill-station, Kodaikanal is a Tamil word which means 'The Gift of the Forest'.
. It undoubtedly stands true to its name that radiates with a cover of vivid eucalyptus trees and shola forests. From the meadows and grasslands of Palani Hills to the serenity of Kodaikanal Lake, it is a highly-attractive tourist destination of Tamil Nadu.
Also called Kodai Lake, it is an artificial lake and the main attraction of the hill-station. In 1863, the then collector of Madurai constructed it followed by a Boat Club on its edge. At present, it collectively is a hotspot of tourists who enjoy it with boating and a leisure stroll in its 5 km boundary. The silence and cool atmosphere is a wonderful feeling that makes it hard to leave.
The resplendent park is an idyllic place to relax and explore interesting varieties of flowers. It was established in 1980 by a British Army Officer, Glenn Bryant, close to the Kodai Lake. Huge dahlias of multiple hues are the main attraction that you should definitely see. A walk in its pruned garden with umpteen species of flowers will shower you with eternal bliss.
Nearly 1 km from the lake will bring you to this picturesque hill-edged pathway, famous for offering spellbinding views. The beauty of this route was discovered by Er. Coaker in 1872. It slowly gained popularity and emerged as one of the top attractions of Kodaikanal. Enjoy the panoramic view of the plains and if it is a clear sky, the gaze reaches as far as Dolphin's Nose.
Besides greenery, temples are another thing that is ubiquitous in South India. The most famous in Kodaikanal is this ancient temple dedicated to Lord Murugan. It is named after the rare Kurinji flowers that distinctively bloom once in 12 years. The amazing location of the temple will offer you a scenic view of Palani and Vaigi Dam.
The water of famous Kodaikanal Lake forms a spectacular waterfall which people recognize by the name of Silver Cascade Falls. It is fed by several streams from Palani Hills, which after passing through the lake falls from a height of 180 feet. Watching the water beautifully cascading down the rocks is a sight for sore eyes. You can also take a bath in the fresh mountain water.
The ideal time to visit Tamil Nadu would be in winters from October to February.
