A fascinating city where history meets spirituality, Amritsar is the lure of beautiful temples, poignant monuments, colorful culture, and mouthwatering food. Founded by Guru Ramdas in 1577, the city is named after the holy Amrit Sagar Lake that surrounds the Golden Temple. Amritsar played a major role in the Indian independence movement and still bears poignant reminders of the same. Come along to the alleyways of Amritsar, fondly called Ambarsar, to soak in its vibrant culture and soothing spirituality.
The Golden Temple, the most sacred pilgrimage of the Sikhs, is not just a sacred shrine but also a temple of spirituality that embraces people of all faiths & nationalities in its enduring warmth. Soaring above the waters of the holy lake, the temple is a stunning mix of marble & gold. Despite bustling crowds & volunteers, the Golden Temple retains its divine aura and is a perfect place to meditate. Visit here early morning, watch its awe-inspiring reflection in the holy waters, and eat the delicious Kara Prasad for a taste of divinity.
A poignant reminder of the atrocities of the colonial era, Jallianwala Bagh Memorial pays homage to hundreds of men, women & children, who were shot dead here during a peaceful protest in 1919. Its bullet-ridden walls are mute witnesses to the ruthless act of the colonial rulers. The Light & Sound Show hosted here every evening, that recreates the events of that fateful day, is a soul-stirring experience.
A beautiful marble structure with a gold dome rising above a holy tank, Durgiana Temple is built quite like the Golden Temple. Dedicated to Goddess Durga, this stunning temple is much visited during the Navratri festival when devotees worship & celebrate the nine forms of the goddess.
This former summer palace of Maharaja Ranjit Singh of Punjab has now been converted to a museum showcasing his enduring legacy. Visit here to check out various paintings, manuscripts, and antique coins of the bygone era. The panorama, located in the adjoining Ram Bagh Gardens, showcases the life of Maharaja Ranjit Singh through paintings, 3-D pictures, and multimedia presentations.
No visit to Amritsar is complete without visiting Wagah Border, the only road border between India and Pakistan. Visit here in the evening to witness the beating of the retreat ceremony held with great fanfare when the flags of both the nations are lowered at sunset & border gates closed for the day.

The walled city of Amritsar is the best place to shop. Haggle for Phulkari dupattas in vibrant colors, pretty Punjabi juttis, woolens, and trinkets to take back a piece of this soulful city.
Delectable food & heartwarming hospitality are the hallmarks of Amritsar. Try delicious Amritsari Kulche, butter-flavored Dal Makhani, zesty Amritsari Fish, Paranthas with dollops of butter along with sweet lassi for a scrumptious Amritsar experience. Finish your meal with a yummy Kulfi or lip-smacking Phirni served in an earthen pot.
The best time to visit Amritsar would be in winter from October to March when the weather is pleasant enough to explore the city and eat to your heart’s content.
