Bhutan, the last known Shangri La, long isolated from the world, opened its doors to tourism a few decades ago. However, development in Bhutan comes along with sensitivity towards its environment and customs, thus preserving its natural bounties and age-revered traditions. This dramatic landscape- from snowcapped mountains to lush rice paddies crisscrossed with sparkling rivers and dense forests- is sure to leave you in awe and wonder.
The last of the Himalayan kingdoms, Bhutan is rooted in timeless traditions and tenets of Buddhism. Largely untouched by the ravages of the west, life in Bhutan follows its customs. Traditional costume is the norm, cities here have no traffic lights, and the country’s wealth is measured by the happiness of its citizens- Welcome to this mystical land lost in time.
Snow-clad mountains and emerald valleys, dotted with colorful towns & villages, form the spectacular landscapes of Bhutan. Beautiful green ripples of terraced rice & potatoes fields add to the gorgeous scenery. Driving up its winding roads with clear blue skies above and plunging gorges below is a thrilling experience.
Perched high on mountains, Bhutan’s spectacular dzongs (fortress) are architectural masterpieces built to serve several purposes. Built-in traditional architectural styles, these spectacular buildings now serve as regional administration centers, cultural & historical museums, and are traditional venues for various festivals. Tashichho Dzong in Thimpu, Rinchin Pung Dzong in Paro, and Punakha Dzong are fine specimens of brilliant Bhutanese architecture.
Bhutan is home to numerous Buddhist temples & monasteries, both old & new, and all spectacularly ornate. Taktsang Monastery, also known as Tiger’s Nest, is one of the major attractions of Bhutan. Zilukha Nunnery in Thimpu and temples & monasteries in Paro & Punakha are quite breathtaking.
Bhutan’s pristine landscapes offer a one-of-a-kind experience to adventure seekers. Go cycling on the rugged mountainous terrain, battle the waters of glacier-fed rivers on a raft or a kayak, explore exotic trekking trails, go fishing in mountain rivers, and try your at archery, the national sport of Bhutan- the experience is exhilarating.
Paro, the exotic gateway to Bhutan, is a magical land of pine-clad mountains, shimmering rivers, and a spectacular hilltop fortress. Trek up the winding steep steps to the majestic Tiger’s Nest monastery, the unofficial icon of Bhutan. Go hiking or cycling on the hilly terrain, try some river-rafting or kayaking, soak in a mineral water bath or unwind & do some soul searching- Paro is a perfect destination for all of it and more!
Nestled amongst the towering Himalayas, Thimpu is the stunning capital of Bhutan. Devoid of swanky buildings, urban grime, milling crowds, and traffic lights; Thimpu is unlike any other world capital. Bhutanese-style houses, spectacular Buddha statues, fluttering prayer flags, and tinkling prayer bells mark this beautiful Bhutanese capital.
A gorgeous, picture-perfect landscape greets you in the little town of Punakha. The beautiful Punakha Dzong, sitting by the riverside, is a stunning picture of Bhutanese architecture. The former capital of the Kingdom of Bhutan, Punakha beckons you to explore its endless magic of mountains and monasteries.
This ornamental gate in this beautiful Bhutanese border town marks the road entrance to Bhutan from India. This picturesque town is the trade and commerce hub of Bhutan.
