A mish-mash of cultures & heritage, from the Dutch Palace that witnessed many royal coronations to the crumbling synagogues and from colonial churches to age-old Portuguese bungalows, Fort Kochi takes you back in time. Stroll through the narrow lanes of this historical area to delve deeper into the eventful history of Fort Kochi.
Built by the Portuguese for the Cochin royalty, this palace was later taken over by the Dutch and is thus known as the Dutch Palace. The 16th-century palace, a beautiful mix of local & colonial architecture, is distinguished for its exquisite mythological murals & frescos. It also houses a museum showcasing artifacts, coins, and stamps of the Cochin royal family.
The oldest synagogue in the entire British Commonwealth, Pardesi synagogue, is the legacy of the Sephardic Jews who built it in 1568. The star of David on its humble gate and the tall clock tower welcome you in. Its interiors ornate with Chinese willow-patterned tiles, Belgian lamps & chandeliers, oriental rugs, and gold crowns, are a picture of timeless beauty.
This colonial-era Church, believed to be the oldest in India, was built in the early 16th century. It marks the grave of the legendary Portuguese explorer, Vasco De Gama, who died & was buried here in 1524. His remains were later transferred to Lisbon, but the gravestone is still here.
Locally known as Cheenavala, attributing them to the Chinese traders of the 13th century, these cantilever fishing nets are a fixture in this part of Kerala.
A wafting aroma of spices leads to the spice market in Fort Kochi, where spice warehouse line the street, and a heady aroma of ginger, cloves, black pepper, cinnamon, and cardamom seeps in through your senses.
