A traditional town set at the base of Chamunda Hills, Mysore epitomizes the glory of the Woodeyar Dynasty and the opulent legacy of Tipu Sultan. Whether you call it Mysore or by its traditional & now official name, Mysuru, its old-world charm remains the same. Its royal ambiance, shady avenues, heritage mansions, and beautiful temples are sure to cast a magical spell on you. Join us on a royal tour of Mysore- the cultural & heritage capital of Karnataka that promises to sweep you off your feet!
Touched with the royal opulence of the Wodeyar rulers, Mysore Palace redefines beauty & elegance. Its striking combination of Indo-Islamic architecture, with a touch of Gothic, is simply brilliant. Armed with royal canons and embellished with spectacular paintings & royal artifacts, Mysore Palace is certainly worthy of its status as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
A short drive from Mysore takes you to Srirangapatnam, the island capital of Tipu Sultan- the legendary Tiger of Mysore. Enclosed by River Cauvery on all sides, and defended by tall gates, massive double walls, & high battlements, Srirangapatnam Fort is a marvel of defense systems of the bygone era. The fort also houses a monument at the site of Tipu Sultan’s death in a battle against the British.
Tipu Sultan’s Srirangapatnam Summer Place, known as Darya Daulat Bagh, is a graceful edifice built with teakwood. Its interiors are graced with murals & paintings of war scenes and contemporary Indian durbars while a sprawling garden forms the outdoors. Now converted into a museum, the palace showcases a fascinating collection of Tipu Sultan’s memorabilia along with the tombs of Tip and his father Hyder Ali.
The intricately carved doors of this palace-converted-gallery protect a gem of over 2000 paintings done in various Indian styles. However, the main attraction here is Haldenkar’s painting- the lady with the lamp, which is exhibited in a dark room to give an illusion that the glow of the lamp is lighting the lady’s face. The gallery also displays fascinating artifacts like a unique French clock, a musical calendar, and a painting on a grain of rice.
An arduous climb of a thousand steps takes you to the hilltop temple of Chamundeshwari Devi, the royal deity of Mysore. Its serene ambiance, the glorious sunrise, and spectacular city views make the steep ascent worth the effort.
