Dazzlingly diverse and dotted with hidden treasures, Gujarat is the land of panoramic landscapes, rich heritage, and colorful handicrafts. An extended coastline promising pristine beaches, the sparkling salt desert in Kutch, and the lush Saurashtra region inhabited by Asiatic lions, creates the spectacular topography of Gujarat.
Its rich architectural legacy from a smattering of erstwhile princely states, its magnificent temples, holy pilgrimages, thrilling wildlife, and artistic handicrafts make it a perfect vacation destination. Its vivid festivals, ever-so-slightly sweet vegetarian cuisine, and warm-hearted people add to its charismatic appeal.
Gujarat is a treasure-trove of rich heritage and enduring legacy of the past. The glorious ruins of the Indus Valley civilization, the stunning multistoried step wells, the UNESCO-listed World Heritage City of Old Ahmedabad, the Ashoka edicts in Junagarh, the magnificent Lakshmi Vilas palace in Vadodara, and the brilliant architecture of Sidi Sayyed Mosque in Ahmedabad Illustrate the finest architecture of the bygone era. However, heritage here takes another meaning in the form of Sabarmati Ashram and Dandi Kutir, which epitomizes the everlasting legacy of Mahatma Gandhi.
Gujarat’s magnificent temples have been the talk of the centuries. The splendid Swaminarayan Akshardham Temple in Gandhinagar, the sacred shrine of Lord Shiva in Somnath, the hilltop Jain temples in Shatrunjaya, and the sacred city of Lord Krishna in Dwarka are some of the most visited shrines in the region.
Gujarat is awash with the hues of exotic migratory birds and echoes with the roars of the majestic Asiatic Lion. Travel to Sasan Gir for a thrilling lion safari in the dense jungles of Saurashtra and watch the Rann of Kutch swashed in pink with thousands of flamingoes nesting in the region.
India’s first UNESCO-listed World Heritage City, bearing the timeless legacy of Mahatma Gandhi, Ahmedabad is a charming blend of heritage and modernity. The brilliantly developed Sabarmati riverfront, thecharisma of Mahatma Gandhi well-preserved in Sabarmati Ashram, the exceptional architecture of Adlaj Ki Vav (stepwell) and the historic museums in Ahmedabad make it a perfect heritage city.
Saurashtra, locally known as Kathiawar peninsula, is home to many beautiful destinations and attractions. Junagarh’s ancient Upperkot Fort believed to be built by Chandragupta Maurya in 319 BC and ancient edicts installed by Emperor Ashoka, the picturesque Girnar Hill with its smattering of Jain & Hindu temples, the serenity of Somnath Temple sitting proudly by the The Arabian Sea and the seat of Lord Krishna in Dwarka are some of the remarkable attractions of Saurashtra. However, the lion safari in the jungles of Gir and spotting the elusive blackbuck in Velavadar Blackbuck National Park adds to the thrill.
Often described as the wild west of India, Kutch is a huge stretch of the barren salt desert, spanning over 45,000km2. It may be the largest salt desert in the world, yet the vibrant people, festivals and handicrafts of Kutch paint the landscape in vivid shades. Surreal landscapes, fascinating Harappan ruins in Dholovira, captivating archeological sites in Anjar, exciting shipbuilding yards of Mandvi, and the entrancing ruins of palaces & havelis in Bhuj mark the enchanting history of Kutch. The endangered wild ass of Kutch and thousands of migratory birds, including the beautiful pink flamingoes, are found in the region.
The Great Rann of Kutch, though a part of the Kutch district, merits a distinct mention due to its dreamlike landscapes and festivities. The area, packed with salt, shines silvery during the day and casts a pearly glow in the moonlight. The Rann of Kutch festival that begins in November and lasts till February is a vibrant extravaganza of white tents, local Kutch cuisine, folk music & dances, and colorful handicrafts of Kutch are on display. Sleep under the stars, eat Kutchh Dabeli and experience the incredible allure of the Rann.
A bonanza of picturesque landscape and compelling heritage, Gujarat is coming up as a major destination off the beaten track. Book a Gujarat tour package and explore the many facets of this beautiful West Indian state.
