A city built upon cities, this modern capital of India embraces its timeless legacy with grace and elegance. The ruins of Siri & Tughlakabad, the magnificence of Humayun’s Tomb, the mayhem of Old Delhi, and the tree-lined avenues of Luyten’s Delhi; all merge to form this modern citadel of India.
Cosmopolitan since times immemorial and a melting pot of cultures, Delhi is a cultural tapestry dyed in rainbow colors. Chaotic bazaars, boisterous festivals and fingerlicious food drive the relentless tempo of this pulsating city. Shop in the narrow lanes of Chandni Chowk and do try the delicious street food and lip-smacking butter chicken to experience the real taste of Delhi.
Delhi is a treasure-house of heritage in the form of historical relics, forts, magnificent havelis, spectacular tombs, and colonial buildings. UNESCO-listed world heritage sites like Humayun’s Tomb, Red Fort, and the sprawling ruins in the Qutb Complex stand tall as silent sentinels of the glorious past of Delhi.
Built as Shahjahanabad, the city of Emperor Shah Jahan, the walled city of Delhi is now referred to as Old Delhi. The spectacular Chandni Chowk, a royal market during the Mughal era, is still as vibrant as ever. Take a rickshaw ride amidst the colorful chaos of its narrow lanes, taste the delicious ‘jalebis’ & ‘kachoris’, and buy some trinkets as keepsakes. You may also take an early morning cycle tour of Old Delhi that takes you through the historic landmarks like the Spice Market, Jama Masjid, Fatehpuri Masjid, and Chandni Chowk. Watch the old city waking up to a delightful cacophony as you pedal around its cramped alleyway.
Affectionately called Lutyen’s Delhi after the British architect who designed its spectacular monuments, boulevards, and bungalows; Central Delhi houses the grandeur of the colonial-era architecture in India. India Gate, President’s Estate, Parliament House, and Connaught Place depict the British heritage in India.
A potpourri of religions, Delhi is home to beautiful temples like Akshardham & Lotus temple and age-revered mosques like the stunning Jama Masjid. Historical Sikh temples like Gurudwara Rakabganj Sahib and many colonial-era churches also grace the city. You may visit Rajghat and pay your respects to Mahatma Gandhi- the man who became an iconic symbol of humanity.
Delhi is an absolute haven for shopaholics! The many bazaars of Delhi from Chandni Chowk to Sarojini Nagar and Lajpat Nagar are perfect places to buy fabrics and knick-knacks. Haggle with the shopkeepers and eat street food as you pick loads of gorgeous stuff. Buy exquisite handicrafts directly from the artisans at Dilli Haat, shop in Janpath Market for chunky jewelry & Tibetan memorabilia, and check out the emporium lane in the Connaught circle to buy authentic handicrafts at best price.
Delhi is aptly called the food capital of India. Lip-smacking street food, delicious Chole Bature, kebabs, jalebis and the famous “butter chicken”- the food in Delhi is simply to die for.
