Sunderbans forest sprawls over an area of around 10,000 km2 from India to Bangladesh, the park is located in an area of around 1400 km2 and is a water-logged jungle. Its ever-changing topography, due to tidal waterways & silt deposits, is dotted with little islands, sandbars, mudflats, and mangrove swamps. The thick tangles of Sundari trees, an endangered mangrove species, lend the forest its name. Sunderbans abound with around 26 species of salt-tolerant mangroves.

A designated tiger reserve under Project Tiger, the park is home to over 100 magnificent tigers stealthily roaming the terrain. But it is not just the tigers, a host of other animals from macaques & leopards to wild boars, chitals, fishing cats, and pangolins inhabit the park. Estuarine crocodiles, rare Ganges Dolphins, and endangered Olive Ridley turtles can also be seen here.

A Ramsar Site, protected under the Ramsar Convention, the wetlands of Sundarbans are home to around 286 species of birds. Rose-ringed parakeets, kingfishers, partridges, herons, Caspian terns, seagulls, plovers, and pintails fill the silence of the forests with their whistles & birdsongs.

Best Time to Visit Taj

The forest is open year-round, but the best time to visit Sunderbans National Park is in winter from October to April. During winters, the animals come out of the dense jungles to the mudflats to get some sun.

How to Reach Taj Mahal

By Air - Netaji Subhash Chandra Airport, Kolkata, around 100 km away, is the closest airport.

By Train - Canning Railway Station, around 48 km from Sunderbans National Park, is the nearest railhead. Then take a bus or cab to Godkhali Jetty for a boat ride to the park.

By Road - A well-maintained network of roads & highways connect you to Godkhali, the gateway to the Sunderbans. Thereafter it is by boats all the way!
