Shirdi, a little town in Ahmednagar district of Maharashtra, is synonymous with Sai Baba, the much-worshipped saint of Shirdi. Sai Baba’s real name and whereabouts are not known. He arrived in Shirdi in this youth and practiced a life of discipline, kindness, and austerity till he finally passed on to his heavenly abode. His devotees believed him to be blessed with curative powers that healed ill and incapacitated. His teachings, embodying all religions, preached the universal language of love and have been imbibed by his followers from various religions, faiths, and walks of life.
Join us as we take you to Shirdi that celebrates and venerates its much-hallowed saint, Sai Baba. A huge temple complex in Shirdi marks various places of importance in keeping with the history and teachings of Sai Baba.
This is the temple where the sacred body of Sai Baba is resting in Samadhi (burial). Built-in white marble with a spectacular idol of Baba, Samadhi Mandir is the holiest place for Sai devotees. The temple has a huge assembly hall for the devotees, a room showcasing articles handled by Sai Baba, and pictures depicting his life. Morning & evening prayers are held at the temple.
It is believed that Sai Baba came to Shirdi along with a marriage procession, and stayed at this abandoned mosque, Dwarkamai, throughout his life. Situated right at the entrance of the Samadhi Mandir, Dwarkamai is home to an oil painting of Sa Baba, his alms bowl, and a few of his possessions.
Gurusthan marks the spot under a Neem Tree, where Sai Baba was first spotted in Shirdi. A small temple has been built at this place with the branches of Neem Tree coming through its roof.
Sai Baba used to sleep at Chavadi every alternate day. This cottage, that still holds his bed & his chair, has been converted to a temple. Every Thursday, a palanquin procession takes a picture of Sai Baba from Dwarkamai to Chavadi Mandir.
Lendi Baug was created and watered by Sai Baba himself, who used to go there to rest and meditate every morning & afternoon. He had dug a pit under a Neem Tree and kept an earthen lamp in it. Now, a lamp in a glass box marks the spot and is kept lit at all hours. Lendi Baug is also home to tombs of Baba’s ardent devotees.
Gurupurnima- Honoring Sai Baba as a Guru (teacher)
Vijayadashmi- Sri Sai Punyatithi or the day of Sai Baba’s passing. It is marked by a grand community meal.
The markets in Shirdi are brimming with Sai Baba related memorabilia, his statues & idols, and various books based on his teachings.
The best time to visit Shirdi would be from July to February, when the weather is pleasant, but special occasions like Guru Purnima and Sai Punyatithi considered most sacred to seek Sai Baba’s blessings.
