No place in India exemplifies opulence and royalty better than the Lake Palace in Udaipur. Earlier called Jagniwas, this classic gem used to be favorite retreat from the summer heat of the royals of Mewar. It is strategically built in the heart-warming setting on an island in Lake Pichola with backdrop juxtaposed by wavy hills. To reach here, one has to take a boat ride from the bank of Lake Pichola. The lavish palace is now converted into a luxury heritage hotel administered by Taj Group of Hotels.
Its history dates back to the period between 1743 and 1746 when it was being constructed under Maharana Jagat Singh II of Mewar dynasty and was hence named after him as Jag Niwas. A lot of semi-precious stones were used in the making for the ornamentation of its black and white marble walls. The face of the palace was directed to the east for offering prayers to Surya God easily.
You will find moments of pure grace; gazing up at the exquisitely carved ceilings, colorful windows peeking out to magnetizing views. A round of this colossal structure will show you a web of pillared terraces, gardens, courtyards, fountains and others. Being located in the precincts of the lake, every spot of the palace is a kaleidoscope to wondrous lake and mountain views.
Although converted to a heritage hotel, it remains a place of public interest who can visit without any restriction. The premise is packed with large standout attractions like Phool Mahal, Bhada Mahal, Ajjan Niwas, Khush Mahal and Dhola Mahal. These now serve as plush rooms where guests are provided a luxurious stay. The hotel is also a great place to enjoy authentic Mewari food. After a filling lunch, you can potter around and hop into the interesting Vintage and classic car collection. It displays vintage cars including those once used by the royals.
Thanks to its ideal location which lies in proximity with other attractions like City Palace, Bagore ki Haveli and Jagdish Temple. It is recommended to visit this place between October and March, as that is when the weather becomes salubrious.
