A sleepy little town in Madhya Pradesh, Khajuraho is a treasure trove of some of the finest temple art in the world. These Nagara-styled temples, built by the Chandela dynasty rulers mainly during 950 Ad to 1050 AD, were lost to the world for centuries till they were rediscovered by a British officer in 1838. Out of around 85 temples, only 25 have survived the plunder of time and invaders and have now been categorized into three different groups based on their locations. Though the temple sculptures and carvings are based on a range of themes from spiritual teachings to royalty & kinship, they are most famed for their erotic symbolism.
The largest and most spectacular of all, the Western Group of Temples is rightfully preserved as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. This landscaped complex of temples, built as far as the 11th century, is quite well preserved and is accessible only after paying a small fee. Though there are many temples in the complex, it is Kendriya Mahadev Temple and Lakshamana Temple that steal the limelight for their grand structure & detailed carvings.
The eastern group consists of a mix of Hindu & Jain temples where four are scattered in the village and three Jain temples housed in a complex. The spectacularly carved Parasavnath Temple, the beautiful Brahma temple, & ornately carved walls of Ghantai temple are the highlights of the Eastern Group of Temples.
Much smaller than the other two complexes, this complex is home to the beautiful Chaturbhuj temple, the only temple in Khajuraho facing west. Another beautiful temple here is the Dulhadev Temple dedicated to Lord Shiva as a bridegroom. Excavations are still on in the area, and we are hoping for more architectural gems to appear.
Every evening, the temples are lit up, and a Light & Sound show is held depicting the glorious history of the Chandela Dynasty and the temples of Khajuraho.
