An idyllic setting sprinkled with timeless ruins and soaked in glorious sunsets, Hampi takes you to the long-forgotten days of Deccan's glory. Once the ornate capital of the Vijayanagara Empire, this compelling boulder-strewn landscape is now a UNESCO-preserved World Heritage Site and a much-visited heritage hub of India. Let's take a walk through this sprawling landscape that seems like an open-air museum showcasing magnificent temples, and artistic edifices.
One of the oldest functioning Shiva temples in India Virupaksha Temple dates back to the 7th century, much before the Vijayanagar Empire. It’s tall Gopuram, towering over the landscape, and exquisitely carved walls & pillars illustrate the heights of the craftsmanship of yesteryears.
Located amid the ruins of the Royal Enclosure, Queen’s Bath with its carved interiors, and stucco windows is a spectacular royal bathing chamber of the bygone era.
Living through the plunder of time & history, the Lotus Mahal is a marvelous blend of Indo-Islamic architecture. Splendid with gopuram-like towers and arched doors, this striking structure was once the social haunt of the royal ladies of Vijayanagar. .
A massive rock-face with steps carved into it, Hemkuta Hill promises you incredible views of Hampi and is a perfect place to click some splendid pictures. Though the hill is littered with temples, pillars, gateways, and pavilions, the two spectacular monoliths of Ganesha certainly steal the show.
This beautiful Vishnu Temple is much known for its iconic pillars that represent different musical instruments and emanate their sounds. This architectural genius makes this temple a wonder of Indian art & architecture.

Sprawled over a kilometer, this roadside market is a great place to buy spectacular handcrafted bags & textiles, antiques, miniatures of Hampi ruins, and various other souvenirs of the lost city.
The best time to visit Hampi would be in winter from October to March when the weather is ambient for you to walk through the sprawling landscape.
