Char Dham Yatra

India shares an inextricable bond with religions that have always been a centre of fascination for the world. The galore of annual festivals, pilgrimages and harvest celebrations keep alive the spirit of ethos and traditions. Of all the religious events, one of the most revered is Char Dham Yatra. The predominant Hindu religion of the country regards Char Dham Yatra pilgrimage earnestly as a spiritual key to achieve moksha. As described by Adi Shankaracharya it is a circuit of four sites viz. Badrinath, Rameswaram, Dwaraka and Puri. These mystical abodes were accorded after their special mention in Hindu epics, Ramayana and Mahabharata. Visiting these divine places is not only a channel to awaken your soul, but their picturesque locations make the journey more astounding.

The term Char Dham is Hindi translation of four holy sites which are Badrinath, Rameswaram, Dwaraka and Puri. According to beliefs, a visit to these four places helps achieve salvation (moksha). People say that every Hindu must go for this pilgrimage at least once in a lifetime to get rid of sins. These are located poles apart at four distinct corners of India. Badrinath lies in Uttarakhand, Rameswaram in Tamil Nadu, Dwarka in Gujarat and Puri in Odisha.

The sacred four Dhams

Badrinath

Badrinath

It is the Himalayan pilgrimage site with Badrinath temple located on the bank of Alaknanda River in Uttarakhand. Its importance equates with its beauty lying between the Nar and Narayana mountain ranges and Nilkantha peak at an average height of 3,100 m in Garhwal Hills. The temple is enshrined with the black Saligram stone idol of Lord Badrinarayan which was discovered in Alaknanda River. Its architecture stands 15 m tall amid snowy mountains with a lustrous gilded roof which is a must-see.

Rameswaram

Rameswaram

The south of India is marked with another pilgrimage site, Ramanatha Swamy Temple located in Rameswaram, Tamil Nadu. The temple is believed to be consecrated by Lord Rama dedicating to Lord Shiva. It is a stunning example of typical South Indian architecture with towering nine stories embellished with elaborate artwork. The presiding deities are Spatikalingam (crystal lingam), Vishwalingam and Ramalingam.

Dwaraka

Dwaraka

Dwarka lies in the west, at the confluence of Gomti River and the Arabian Sea in Gujarat state. The historic city is believed to be the place where Lord Krishna lived. It is recognized for the famous Dwarkadheesh temple which is also called Jagat Mandir. The temple is dedicated to Dwarkadheesh which is known as Trivikrama, a form of Vishnu and is depicted with four arms.

Puri

Puri

One of the earliest inhabited cities of east India, Puri is accorded as one of the Char Dhams. The major religious site is Shree Jagannath Temple dedicated to Lord Jagannath, a form of Lord Vishnu. It receives huge attention with the famous Ratha Yatra or chariot festival in which devotees congregate to conduct a procession of the principal deity.

The driver, guides and everyone associated with the organisation were professional, reliable and punctual! We had an amazing time, made even better because of the good accomodation choices and extra additions, such as elephant and camel ride.
