Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary

A Maharaja’s duck hunting park turned into a safe haven for birds flying in from far corners of the world, Bharatpur’s bird sanctuary has certainly come a long way from its royal roots! Officially named Keoladeo Ghana National Park, this is one of the choicest bird sanctuaries across the globe. A UNESCO-listed national park and the much-acclaimed winter home for the beautiful Siberian cranes, the wetlands of Bharatpur are a paradise for birdwatchers, nature enthusiasts, and avid photographers.

Legends & Lay of the Land

This manmade wetland of Bharatpur Bird Sanctuary was created by building embankments & earthen dams to turn the land into a marshy area. Its landscape comprising of bogs, scrubland, grasslands, and lakes makes it a great attraction for waterfowls who thong the sanctuary in great numbers. In fact, in 1938, the legendary duck shooting record here was 4273 ducks shot in a day by a shooting party of 17.

The quiet of the jungle is broken by the ruckus of birds, both resident and migratory, that flock these marshes. Over 370 species of our avian friends may be seen during the winter months in the sanctuary. Right from the rare Siberian crane that flies here thousands of miles across oceans to the majestic Red & white Sarus cranes, and tiny warblers and larks, Bharatpur has it all.

Besides the colorful feathery creatures, Bharatpur is also home to mammals & reptiles. Sambar, striped hyena, golden jackal, spotted deer, jungle cat, wild boar, and pythons are often spotted in the deeper jungles of the sanctuary.

Caper Travel designed a three week tour to Rajasthan and Goa for four of us in a private car during March. The driver, guides and everyone associated with the organisation were professional, reliable and punctual! We had an amazing time, made even better because of the good accomodation choices and extra additions, such as elephant and camel ride.
Thank you so much Caper for giving us a truly memorable experience of your beautiful country!
